Blue Ridge Beef is facing a significant crisis as it recalls its Natural Mix pet food. This recall follows a previous one involving puppy food, raising concerns about the company’s quality control measures. What are the potential health risks for pets and humans?

Blue Ridge Beef’s Recall Details

Blue Ridge Beef has initiated a recall of 5,700 pounds of its Natural Mix pet food due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall specifically targets 2-pound logs with lot number N25/12/31 and UPC number 854298001054.

The contaminated products were distributed in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, and Rhode Island. This recall follows a previous one involving 9,600 pounds of Blue Ridge Beef puppy food for similar salmonella concerns.

Health Risks and Safety Measures

Salmonella poses significant risks to both animals and humans. The FDA warns, “Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.”

Infected pets may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, or decreased appetite. Humans exposed to salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever.

Consumer Action and Company Response

Blue Ridge Beef advises customers to return or destroy the contaminated food immediately. The company emphasizes the importance of not feeding the recalled product to pets or any other animals.

Pet owners should thoroughly wash and sanitize any items that come into contact with the affected products. Blue Ridge Beef, which has been producing raw pet food for over 40 years, states its commitment to “quality, service, and safety.”
