France is ramping up military preparations as tensions with Russia continue to escalate, and thousands of French soldiers are gearing up for a large-scale military exercise in Romania. Set for May 2025, the operation, dubbed Dacian Spring, will involve testing how quickly French troops can reach NATO’s eastern flank should a conflict with Russia arise. This exercise reflects growing concerns within NATO regarding Russia's aggression, particularly after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. France’s involvement signals its commitment to shoring up NATO’s defenses along the alliance's vulnerable southeastern front.
These exercises are part of France's broader efforts to transform its armed forces into a high-intensity combat force capable of responding swiftly to modern warfare challenges, much like the conflict in Ukraine. The French army has undergone significant changes in recent years, with NATO assigning it a key role in bolstering the alliance’s readiness against potential Russian attacks. The French military, aiming to deploy a fully combat-ready division by 2027, will test its ability to send a brigade of between 3,000 and 5,000 troops to Romania within 10 days during this upcoming exercise.

General Bertrand Toujouse, one of France’s top military officials, emphasized that the exercise is no longer about hypothetical conflicts but about preparing for a very real enemy. "We used to play war. Now, there’s a designated enemy," he said, referencing the strategic threat posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. These drills are designed to send a strong signal to Russia and underscore NATO's ability to defend its member states against potential aggression.
However, logistical challenges persist. In previous deployments, French forces faced significant bureaucratic delays and border control issues when attempting to transport military equipment across Europe. As part of their preparations, NATO allies, including France, have worked to resolve these hurdles, improving transportation methods for rapid troop deployment. General Pierre-Eric Guillot, Toujouse’s deputy, noted that while progress has been made, obstacles such as customs measures still pose a risk to military mobility.

This surge in military readiness comes amid broader concerns across Europe that Putin’s Russia could further extend its territorial ambitions. While the Russian military has sustained significant losses in Ukraine, the possibility of Moscow turning its attention toward NATO members, particularly those in Eastern Europe, has driven the alliance to reinforce its eastern borders. NATO has already increased its presence in Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary, and the Dacian Spring exercise is just one part of broader NATO efforts to bolster regional defenses.
France’s decision to participate in these war games also reflects the country’s broader strategy under President Emmanuel Macron, who has not ruled out direct military support for Ukraine, should the conflict escalate. Earlier this year, Macron hinted at the possibility of sending troops to assist Ukraine, further heightening concerns about a potential world war between NATO and Russia.
Romania, which borders Ukraine, plays a critical role in NATO’s strategy for the region. Its proximity to the conflict zones makes it a strategic location for NATO to test and refine its defensive capabilities. French troops have been stationed there as part of NATO’s multinational battlegroup, which has held several military exercises since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The next phase of these drills will be crucial in assessing NATO's preparedness to respond to any Russian aggression in the region.
As the French army continues its transformation and prepares for more intense conflicts, the Dacian Spring 2025 exercise will serve as a pivotal moment for NATO’s readiness against Russian threats.
