Colombia’s Catatumbo region has erupted into chaos as peace talks with the National Liberation Army crumbled, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The strategic border area has become a battleground between the ELN and former FARC members. How will the breakdown of peace talks impact Colombia’s long-term stability?

Devastating Toll on Civilian Lives

The breakdown of peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the ELN has resulted in a horrific surge of violence in the northeastern region of Catatumbo. Over 80 people have been killed, with 20 others injured in the ensuing chaos.

Among the victims were community leader Carmelo Guerrero and seven peace deal signatories, underscoring the targeted nature of the attacks. The violence has forced thousands to flee their homes, seeking refuge in the mountains or shelters.

Government Response and Humanitarian Crisis

Defense Minister Iván Velásquez has taken swift action, visiting Cúcuta for emergency security meetings and urging armed groups to demobilize. The government is deploying military personnel to the affected areas and establishing a humanitarian corridor for safe passage of displaced individuals.

To address the immediate needs of those affected, authorities are sending 10 tons of food and hygiene kits to the region. The Colombian army has also been actively evacuating civilians, including families with their pets, from danger zones.

Ongoing Struggle for Peace

This recent outbreak of violence marks the second suspension of peace talks with the ELN in less than a year. The ELN and former FARC members are locked in a bitter struggle for control over the strategic border region, which is known for its lucrative coca plantations.

The ELN has accused ex-FARC rebels of several killings, including the murder of a family on January 15. This cycle of violence and retribution continues to undermine efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.
