Christmas coming up may be the best time to get a new iphone. The WhatsApp platform will phase out support for older iPhones starting in 2025. If it’s an application you enjoy then you’ll have to look at newer iPhones or alternatives. Users can prepare with a five-month notice.

WhatsApp Ends Support for Older iPhones

WhatsApp announced that it will discontinue support for older iPhone models in May 2025. This update only affects the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Many users will have to upgrade their devices to continue using WhatsApp, as the app will only work on iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later.

The change primarily affects devices that are unable to update past iOS 12.5.7. To maintain access, users must comply with the iOS 15.1 system requirements by May 5, 2024. WhatsApp Business will also require iOS version 15.1 or higher.

User Options and Preparations

Users affected by this change will be given a five-month notice to upgrade their devices or investigate alternative recent phone models. Newer iPhones, starting with the iPhone 7, will remain compatible. WhatsApp is making it easier to migrate data from Android with new tools and upcoming features. Furthermore, this update will not affect Android users.

“Currently, WhatsApp supports iOS 12 and later, but with a future update, the app will require iOS 15.1 or newer to work properly. To help affected users adapt to this change, WhatsApp is providing a five-month notice period, giving them ample time to update their devices if possible or consider alternatives if their hardware does not support newer iOS versions.” – The report

WhatsApp has promised to add a feature for transferring data not only from iOS to Android, but also vice versa, ensuring minimal disruption for users who want to switch platforms. Users can backup their chats to iCloud and use the Chat Transfer feature to keep their media history on newly supported devices.

Why the Change?

WhatsApp’s update takes advantage of advanced technology and APIs provided by recent iOS versions to introduce new features and improve overall security. The company’s goal is to maintain a high standard of messaging services for millions of users worldwide, resulting in faster performance and a better user experience.

While some users must adapt to the changing technology landscape, it also provides an opportunity to embrace modern smartphone capabilities.
